When your vision becomes cloudy: Cataracts

The term “cataracts” or in German “Grauer Star” has nothing to do with a songbird or the so-called “Star”. It refers to the grayish appearance of the pupil in advanced disease and the fixed gaze that blind patients had due to a previously unavailable treatment. Cataracts are a condition in which vision is impaired due to clouding of the lens. Normally, the lens in the eye, which protects the delicate retina, is clear and transparent and focuses the light on the retina. In the case of cataracts, the lens becomes cloudy due to aging or other factors. Cataracts affect quality of life by significantly limiting vision and perception. In advanced stages, cataracts can even lead to complete loss of vision. However, this rarely happens today, as cataracts are highly treatable.

What are the causes of Cataracts?

The causes of cataracts are diverse. Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions among older individuals. In most cases, cataracts occur in people over 60 years of age. However, this eye condition can also affect younger people occasionally and can even occur in infants and newborns. Possible causes in these cases include eye injuries or prolonged use of cortisone eye drops of inflammation. Excessive sunlight or smoking also increase the risk of cataracts. Smoking introduces toxins into the bloodstream, which can cloud the eye lens. Alcohol consumption also negatively affects lens metabolism and deprives the eyes of moisture, potentially leading to cataracts.

You can take steps to prevent cataracts or avoid worsening an existing condition: live on a healthy diet, protect your eyes from sunlight, avoid cigarettes and excessive alcohol, and have your eyes examined regularly.

As part of a comprehensive examination, we first investigate the causes of your complaints to rule out corneal, retinal or optic nerve diseases. For this purpose, we utilize state-of-the-art Zeiss technology in our practice. If you are diagnosed with cataracts, we will discuss the possibility of surgery with you in detail.

Here’s how the cataract surgery process unfolds in our practice:

  • 1.After completing the medical history form, we conduct a thorough vision test including a subjective refraction testing.
  • 2.Using a slit lamp, we thoroughly examine your eyes.
  • 3.Depending on your symptoms, we may conduct further tests such as corneal topography, dry eye assessment, fundus examination and photography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans.
  • 4.If we diagnose cataracts, we will discuss the appropriate timing and procedure details in a comprehensive consultation. We will also explain which intraocular lens we recommend for your case.
  • 5.During the cataract surgery, we replace your natural clouded lens with an artificial lens, allowing you to see clearly again.

After the surgery, your eyes will need time to adjust to the new visual impression until the expected visual acuity is achieved. We will provide detailed guidance on what to do in the first weeks after your cataract surgery for a swift recovery and will support you throughout the healing process.

Do you have questions about cataract surgery? We take the time to address your individual concerns and provide transparent information about the surgical process.
